Kanatran

Kanatran is no longer supported. It will still work, but I will not be adding new words nor kanji. I have moved over to the new program, Kanjiflash.

There was a bad bug in the 10 January 98 Kanatran. Fixing it required changing all of the kan files. If you take any of the kan files from here, make sure you get the newest kanatran.exe. Otherwise, words with hiragana n in them might be wrong.

Here are the files you'll need to use Kanatran. I've separated them into multiple chunks so that when parts change you can just download the ones you need. But you will need one of the kanatran files. You will also need at least one of the .kan data files (of course, you can always write your own). You may want to pull down the readme file. It explains what you need to know to install and run the software.

You'll also need the PowerJapanese Fonts. The good folks at Tranparent have given me permission to distribute their fonts. Before I started taking my Japanese class, I got their excellent Power Japanese program. It's easily the best japanese tutor software around. It worked exceedingly well as a stand alone product and I also found it a very nice counterpoint to my class. I highly reccomend it. Check out the web page of the distributors at Transparent.
WinCE users, note that Kanatran needs sizes 16 and 20 point of these fonts. Also, if you're not seeing any english text, make sure you have Times New Roman sizes 16 and 20. (Those sizes are not there by default on the PPC.)

Kanatran has some limitations. It's a program I wrote to help me study my vocabulary for quizes and tests. For this reason, the vocabulary files are full of words from my classes. You may find that limiting and want to add your own words. You can do that for hiragana/katakana words, but the Kanji are compiled into the exe (so you can't add your own). I need to keep the program as small as possible, as I use it on a 4Mb Handheld PC, so I've only entered the kanji I've learned so far in my class.

This product is freeware. I have no need to get paid for it in any way. However, if you really like it and would like to do something for me, please go read some of my short stories. Or if you're not into science fiction, tell your friends about my stories page. This will please me more than any small shareware fee. Kanatran comes as is with no warranties expressed or implied. Also, you do not have permission to redistribute it. I don't mind you giving my program to friends, but I do not have permission for you to distribute the Power Japanese Fonts. Transparent has been extremely kind to let me redistribute their fonts. Please don't abuse their generosity.

Kanatran for WinNT/95
Kanatran for SH3 WinCE
Kanatran for Mips WinCE

This is the main program. You can use it to study in romaji even if you don't have the PJ fonts. But any hiragana and katakana will look very strange if you don't have those fonts. It can take a file argument on the command line, so you can set up icons to launch the appropriate kan file (ie make a shortcut whose "target" field says
kanatran.exe /f jpp.kan and it will load jpp.kan when you double-click the icon.

The class I'm taking is "Japanese Program For Professionals" and this is the list of vocabulary words we've had so far. This will change weekly as I get new words.

Kanji Vocab List

This file requires the 2 May (or later) version of Kanatran

All the Kanji my class has taught so far are compiled into kanatran. This kan file uses them. Note that Kanji only show up in "quiz mode" (pull down "Quiz" and make sure "Do Quiz" has a checkmark next to it).

Weekly Vocab Lists

Since all the vocab for the first and second year classes are already in the jpp file, I put together weekly kan files (good for studying for vocab quizes) for the first five quarters. They're stored in this directory. These files also require the 11 January (or later) version of Kanatran
